"Sithenaecae" - Strong Oak
This piece for Concert Band and Junior
Band was commissioned for the Stevenage Jubilee Music Festival in 2002. The idea
was to write a piece that had a link with Stevenage, so the first port of call
was the town council website:
"Later Saxon settlers lived at a
safe distance from the Roman Great North Road, in a few huts around the area
where St Nicholas parish church now stands. Their village was in a clearing in
the woods and was called 'Sithenecae' or Strong Oak from which the name
Stevenage was later taken. Other woodland settlements sprang up in the areas now
known as Chells, Broadwater and Shephall."
The piece combines the Saxon feel with
the bustling new town of today. It was premiered at the Gordon Craig Theatre,
Stevenage in June 2002.
