ISLES of SCILLY - Audio
C.D.
Isles of
Scilly - Audio C.D.The music on this compact disc
is influenced by my first visit to Scilly in May 2001. With my wife Sue, and my
good friends Lucy, Tim, Richard & Jamie, we spent a wonderful week exploring the
islands. As time progressed I began to feel and hear a different atmosphere on
each island and the musical ideas really started to flow. I thought that as well
as the many fabulous photographs that can be taken or purchased, wouldn’t it be
great to have a kind of musical photo album of the islands This led to much
frantic scribbling of ideas on any scrap of paper I could find, until I could
get it all home to my studio. I have been experimenting with music technology
for a number of years and this is the result, a combination of acoustic and
digital instruments. I hope that it portrays each island as you see them too.
Track Listing
1.
Samson – Spirit of Mother Earth - MP3 Sample (461kb)
Samson has a quite ethereal quality to it. The feeling of decay, with the ruins
of long since deserted buildings and burial cairns increases the feeling of
isolation after you have been left there by the boatmen. The soprano saxophone
gives the piece a mournful, pleading quality over a string wash.
2. Tresco – Island of Flowers
Tresco is probably the most visited island by tourists and because of this it
has a slightly unreal “picture postcard” quality in places. I felt like I was
one of the “secret seven“ exploring this island, with it’s twin castles on the
western side, Piper’s Hole in the North and then of course the Abbey Gardens
from which the main clarinet theme of this piece was inspired.
3. Hell Bay
Situated on the northwest of Bryher, Hell Bay exposed to the full force of the
Atlantic. This place holds a fascination for me; the bay’s shape creates a
swirling cauldron of excitement of elemental forces during rough weather. The
music took on a demonic theme very quickly, and the use of the thunderstorm
sound effects and gong sounds enhanced this idea. When visiting Hell Bay you can
feel an underlying menace and the sheer power of the sea.
4. Bryher
In contrast to Hell Bay, the rest of the island of Bryher has a much more serene
quality and has some of the best views of the other islands. Because it is
sparsely populated it is possible to walk most of the island without
encountering another person. However the interior of the island houses a small
industrious community.
5. Gig Race
- MP3 Sample (475kb)
Gig racing is the sport of the islands, and the islanders take it very
seriously. There is always an air of competitiveness and visitors are encouraged
to support their host island’s boat which enhances what proves to be a very
exciting spectacle. The frantic drum and bass pattern captures the excitement of
this weekly event.
6. St.Marys’ Dawn
This piece was conceived whilst sat on a crate on the Strand (known to us as
“The Office”) at 6.30 a.m. with a cup of coffee and some manuscript paper.
Watching the harbour come alive as the sun crept over the horizon, the distant
foghorn of the Scillonian III, the early morning sounds of gulls and the wind in
the rigging of the harbour’s boats. You can almost smell the sea!
7. Sir Cloudsley Shovell & The Western Rocks
The Western Rocks have claimed many vessels over the years and this tells the
tale of the H.M.S Association one of the most notable shipwrecks.
8. St.Martins’ Moon
- MP3 Sample (464kb)
This track was inspired when standing on the ramparts of the Star Castle,
watching the moonlight glittering across Crow Sound to St. Martins.
9. St.Agnes – Celtic Isle
St. Agnes is my favourite of the islands. To me it had similar qualities to
those of the Scottish Isles and consequently the music took on a slightly Celtic
style with the underlying drones in the bass.
10. The Bishop Rock
This track depicts an imaginary helicopter flight around this famous landmark.
